Higher education is more important than ever before.

Harold Alfond wanted to encourage generations of Maine families and their children to pursue college or education beyond high school. As a result, he created the Harold Alfond College Challenge. It was his hope that families, communities and businesses would rise to the challenge of investing in the future educational aspirations of Maine’s children.

Mr. Alfond was the former owner of Dexter Shoe Company and created businesses in Maine with Maine people. His love for Maine and interest in sports and children led him to give millions of dollars to Maine people through education, sports programs and centers for children. Mr. Alfond believed that all children deserved the opportunity to achieve higher education and with that he created this gift to help Maine families finance college education for their children. He believed that you could transform individual families and the State’s future prosperity by helping all Maine’s children aspire to higher education.

The Alfond Grant is awarded to a NextGen account. Other terms and conditions apply. NextGen is a Section 529 plan administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME).Before you invest in NextGen, request a NextGen Program Description from your Maine bank or financial advisor, or call FAME at 1-800-228-3734 and read it carefully. The Program Description contains more complete information, including investment objectives, charges, expenses and risks of investing in NextGen, which you should carefully consider before investing. You also should consider whether your home state or your designated beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other benefits that are only available for investments in such state’s 529 plan. Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated (Merrill Lynch), a registered broker-dealer, Member SIPC, is the program manager and underwriter.

NextGen is available to self-directed investors in the Client Direct Series or through financial advisors in the Client Select Series. Each series offers different investment options, each wtih its own sales charges, fees and expense structure. Expenses associated with the Client Direct Series will generally be lower than those associated with the Client Select Series. Currently some of the same investment options are available in each series.
